When it comes to digital security, many users think of protection from viruses and other malware. Apple computers are less vulnerable to malware and other attacks than Windows PCs are. But that’s not where digital security ends, and as of late, Apple users have been targeted more and more.

Digital criminals have been targeting Apple users and attempting to deceive them into giving out their Apple account and/or payment information. These tactics, generally known as ‘phishing’, don’t rely on viruses. Instead, they impersonate official messages and send unsuspecting users to fake sites that resemble their legitimate counterparts. Here, the users enter in their secure information, which is then passed to the criminal for exploitation.

Two recent widespread attacks have targeted Apple users specifically. One mimics the appearance of the Apple ID login page so users will input their username and password. The second alerts users to update Adobe Flash, which instead puts malware onto the machine.

Apple users are likely being targeted for identity theft because of the perception that they have a higher average income than PC users. The thinking is that since Apple products are comparatively more expensive than non-Apple counterparts, their users must have a comparatively higher amount of financial resources than PC users generally.

As always, be wary of unsolicited update messages, especially if they come through new channels. Apple ID settings are almost always handled via an Apple platform (like iTunes), and never in a browser. It is also suggested to have Adobe Flash set to update itself automatically. This way, you can know for certain than any update requests are not legitimate.
