‘Eyeriss’ Mobile AI Computer Chip

Researchers at MIT have unveiled a brand new computer chip which could lead to artificial intelligence soon being available on mobile devices. The Eyeriss, unveiled during the International Solid-State Circuits Conference in San Francisco, can work without needing to connect to a central memory bank, saving huge amounts of time and energy and making the chip suitable for use in mobile device – a potential game-changer for the world of mobile AI.

Data Memory Systems, one of the leading computer memory specialists in the US, is excited about the new development, but stresses that it could be years before technology this sophisticated hits the market.

A spokesman for Data Memory Systems says, “It’s hugely exciting that MIT have managed to create the Eyeriss computer chip, which consumes one-tenth of the energy needed by a regular mobile GPU and could lead the way towards artificial intelligence on mobile devices. Here at Data Memory Systems, we keep our fingers on the pulse of all things related to computer memory, and this is one development that’s certainly caught our eye.”

The spokesman adds, “While it is important to remember that this kind of technology won’t be readily available for a number of years yet, the breakthrough does signal that mobile AI is heading in an exciting direction, with the suggestion that the chip could be utilized in cars, robots, drones and all sorts of other applications, as well as the traditional mobile devices we use every day.”

The development of the Eyeriss chip has been partially funded by a Department of Defense agency, and is an offshoot of a project which tried to imitate the human brain. This project was scrapped during the 1970s before of the huge amount of power it needed – but with progress in this particular field, the team at MIT were able to pick up where the team left off.

It’s thought that the chip could enhance machine-learning capabilities on today’s smartphones, significantly reducing the need for things like server communication and internet connectivity. Devices would still be functional without Wi-Fi connections, and information could be processed locally for privacy reasons. The chip could also revamp the ‘Internet of Things’, by allowing networked devices to use powerful AI algorithms to make important decisions without needing to connect to the internet and transmit personal or private data.

With these new computer chips still a few years from hitting the market, Data Memory Systems can take care of all your existing computer memory needs, from internal upgrades to external hard drives and other accessories. To find out more, visit the website: www.datamemorysystems.com
