A brand new breakthrough in flash memory has been made by Korean researchers which could revolutionize the read/write performance levels of the memory we currently use. The development, which has been labelled WALDIO (Write Ahead Logging Direct IO), records information only when necessary, and in much smaller batches. This allows cheaper flash storage to be used with the same effect as more expensive options, and can also help extend the lifespan of the aforementioned storage – by as much as 39%.

The researchers involved in the project are currently presenting their findings at the USENIX (The Advanced Computing Systems Association) conference in California. It’s hoped that the tech will be implemented in handsets soon, and the development will surely have attracted global attention by other teams who could take the research even further.
