Computer expert warns industry of female decline

In the past, computing was primarily considered a male field. The ratio of men to women was heightened thanks to stereotypical gender roles being projected, however the drive to bring females into this traditionally-male dominated field was seemingly successful, with more women than ever before taking up IT and computer science. Yet it seems like that trend has been bucked. According to latest research, the number of women working in computing is set to decline by an incredible 22 percent by 2025 if nothing is done to encourage more to study the field. And Data Memory Systems, one of the most successful computer memory providers in the US, has warned experts of the effects this will have on the future of the industry if something is not done to buck this trend.

Justin Briere, Senior Account Manager at Data Memory Systems, said, “Computer science has long been considered a male-oriented field, with women veering clear for numerous reasons, however despite a strong push a few years ago to get more young girls interested in the subject, the numbers appear to be declining once more.

“The effects this could have on the industry are huge; from slowing down the development of new techniques and alienating the industry from females altogether. Therefore it is so important to drive forward and open up computers to young women right now – and this starts with education.”

Education is the single most important part of making sure that women maintain their interest in the field according to Data Memory Systems. Taking steps to highlight the industry, its importance in the future of the world and educate children on their options will showcase computer science from an early age. And this, according to the expert, will help to blur outdated gender lines and encourage more women to take an active interest in computers.

The research was conducted by the nonprofit group, Girls Who Code, and highlighted that currently women account for 24 percent of workers in the industry. And with such small numbers to play with, a decline of a seemingly small two percent would impact the future of computer science for women hard.

Justin added, “It’s important to remember that this number is projected is things continue to stay as they are. Things can be done to make a significant difference to the outcome of the computing world, simply by encouraging more young women to enter into the industry.”
