Mars Rover Set To Undergo Interstellar Flash Memory Reformat

After more than 10 years of active service, NASA’s Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity is set to receive an intergalactic flash memory reformat. The process is Opportunity’s first memory upgrade and will see the next generation motor vehicle trawled for worn out memory cells. While the reformat is occurring 54.6 million kilometers from the earth, it does stand as a reminder that everyone should consider reformatting their flash memory drives every once in a while.

Justin Briere of leading computer memory and storage solutions retailer, Data Memory Systems says “Flash memory is our passion and we’re always interested in the latest news and developments – especially when they’re occurring in outer space! While the Mars Exploration Rover opportunity is one of NASA’s most sophisticated machines, we can draw parallels from the necessity of reformatting flash memory drives. Whether it’s as a preventative measure or in response to depreciating performance, it’s something that every technology user should consider.”

Since 2004, Opportunity and its companion Spirit have been roaming Mars, collecting data and transmitting it back to earth. Spirit was retired in 2010, but Opportunity continues to operate on the Red Planet. After recent malfunctions and a series of resets, NASA engineers gave the go-ahead for an interplanetary flash memory reformat.

While the Mars Rover uses its flash memory to capture data about the Red Planet and determine whether or not it was once home to microbial life, reformatting PC, laptop and other digital device systems is just as important. Think of a flash drive like a filing cabinet – when they’re constantly in use, with files being added, removed and used all the time, they can become disorganized and messy, making it harder for a computer to see where to write new files to. Formatting a flash drive wipes data from a drive with ease and speed, compressing files to free up more space and, in some cases, allowing the user to add new, updated software to the drive.

Freeing up space on a personal flash memory drive has the capacity to boost performance and enhance operational speed. A reformat also encourages users to back-up their content regularly, ensuring that no important files are lost. You can bet that the team running Opportunity don’t take any chances when it comes to backing up the data the Rover reports back to them! Backing up important files and documents also offers the peace of mind that in the case of a digital meltdown, valuable data is 100% protected.
