Is Greener Computer Memory On Its Way?

Computer memory changes constantly with new Apple memory chips and PC memory chips hitting the market daily as manufacturers race each other to produce ever bigger and better memory upgrades. A research lab at North Carolina State University announced this week that they are taking things even further with news that their researchers are developing a brand new type of ultra quick memory. The innovation is designed to make computing greener and quicker with no start up time and less power consumption.

In what is sure to be seen as a gauntlet being thrown down to the major memory manufacturers, the North Caroline State University lab is said to have created a single unified memory - this fuses the functions of RAM (a volitile device which allows the computer to work quickly but is unable to save data with out power) and slow memory devices like flash drives (a non-volitile device used to store files, folders, images, music etc.) to give fast performance and data storing capabilities.

The new memory is still in testing at the University so it remains unclear if the trial has been deemed a full success or if the invention will be available in both PC and Apple memory formats. However, what is clear is that the potential to create a single type of computer memory would allow for a supersonic computing experience - imagine a PC that turns on instantly with no hard drive data retrieval needed for the operating system boot, and a machine that can lower the cost of your energy bills and be kinder to the environment by using less power.

The chip in testing has been called a ''double floating-gate field effect transistor." A field effect transistor is referred to as an FET for short.

Computer memory specialists Data Memory Systems have welcomed the research and believe the new chip poses very interesting possibilities not just for the home computer user but also for large businesses who need reliable data storage devices as well as large amounts of computer memory.

While the double floating-gate FET is not expected to be commercially available for some time, you can still tap into some of the benefits of memory upgrades by installing a new memory chip in your PC or Apple machine. New memory improves performance which speeds up computing and can help you perform everyday tasks much quicker as the machine's capabilities and process handling functions work faster.
