NAND Flash Memory: The Basics

NAND flash memory is a certain type of non-volatile computer memory which does not require any power in order to store data. The development of NAND flash technology has progressed in recent years, with the aims being to reduce cost-per-bit and to increase the maximum chip capacity, so that tiny flash memory devices can eventually compete with the traditional magnetic storage devices that make up hard disks. Technology means that chips are getting smaller and smaller, whilst increasing the read-write cycles and creating lower voltage demands.

As a result of these new innovations, the market for NAND memory is growing steadily. A point of plateau hasn't been reached yet, which means that demand seems to be ever increasing. As more and more products such as smartphones and tablets begin to take advantage of flash memory, the product begins to command more shares in the market. It is predicted that in 2013, smartphones will command a larger chunk of the industry than ever, with approximately 792 million flash memory units created purely to use in smartphones.

Flash memory innovations such as NAND, and their consequent popularity among manufacturers, represent an important shift in the world of computer memory solutions. Rather than relying on components such as hard disks, which depend on moving parts, flash memory functions without any mechanical means and saves information without a power source. This greatly reduces the risk of moving parts breaking, becoming damaged from overuse or failing to initiate; a problem which has been known to cause permanently lost data in many cases. A shift towards flash memory from the more old-fashioned methods greatly reduces these risks. The only real danger posed to flash memory and the data it is able to store is exposure to a magnetic field, but it is highly unlikely that a magnetic field strong enough to damage such stored information will ever be encountered unknowingly.

As technology developers work to decrease the size and price of NAND flash memory whilst increasing the capacity as well as the read-write cycles, this memory solution becomes an ever more popular method to store data. It is now used within traditional cell phones, digital cameras, notebook computers and USB storage devices, as well as the smartphones and tablets which now dominate the industry. Its reliability is the next step in digital data storage and experts predict the market will continue to steadily grow for the foreseeable future.
