Data Memory Systems, one of the US’ leading suppliers of computer memory solutions, is helping all those who received gadgets as gifts this Christmas, by matching them with the memory cards that will unlock the true potential of their new smartphone, digital camera or tablet.

High-tech devices like smartphones, tablets and cameras consistently hit the upper echelons of the ‘most popular gift’ lists, and with millions of new gadgets coming into homes over Christmas, many users will be looking for ways to get the best from their new device. A memory card is one of the easiest ways to do this, offering increased storage to boost the capabilities of any device. But with so many varieties of memory card on offer, which option is the most suitable for each device?

A spokesman for Data Memory Systems says, “Memory cards are a fantastic way to increase the storage capacity of any device, as well as boosting its capabilities. But with SDs, Micro SDs, Compact Flash cards and other options all on the market, how can you tell which card is best for your device? We’ve come up with a few handy hints and tips for those hoping to maximize their new device’s potential – and don’t forget to browse the entire Data Memory Systems product range for the best prices on thousands of great flash memory solutions.”

The first thing users should consider is what their memory card will be used for. Those who want to use their memory card to store movies to be watched on a new tablet will certainly be looking for high storage capabilities – but those planning to use their card with a DSLR camera might also want to consider things like how fast images can be saved and stored. Users will also need to bear in mind the ports and memory card slots your device has available – trying to push a Micro SD card into an SD slot without an adapter can lead to catastrophic consequences!

There are three main types of memory card available on the market: Secure Digital (also known as SD) cards, Micro SD cards and CompactFlash (CF) cards. SD cards are the most common – they’re found in cameras, camcorders and even laptops, and are split into three main types depending on the capacity and speed. The standard SD card has up to 2GB capacity with 2MB/s read speed – but if you’re looking for better specs, the SDHC has up to 64GB capacity with 24MB/s read speed, and the SDXC has up to 2TB capacity and 104MB/s read speed. Power users and professionals should look for the latter options, while those with a simple point-and-shoot camera or camcorder should go for a regular SD.

Micro SD cards are essentially smaller versions of SD cards, often found in smaller gadgets like mobile phones and Go Pro-style body cameras. They’re divided into types just like the standard SDs, with Micro SDHC and Micro SDXC cards offering heightened capabilities. Adapters are also available to enable users to use their Micro SD cards in SD slots.

CompactFlash slots are usually found on professional-level DSLRs and other high-tech equipment. Most robust, with higher capacity and faster read/write speeds, these memory cards are most appropriate for those who rely on their gadgets for part of their work – whether they’re a videographer, a photographer, an editor or another profession that works with large volumes of HD video.
