BLOG: How to recover deleted files on your PC

RECOVER DELETED FILES
As the world relies more heavily on computers and technology, the importance of keeping them safe cannot be underestimated. That being said however, deleting files by accident is all too common. And we’ve all been there. Whether you thought you didn’t need a file or folder, accidentally tapped ‘Delete’ when you meant to tap ‘Enter’ or simply wasn’t paying attention, the initial feeling of deleting something you need can be terrifying. However not all is lost. After the initial panic has settled in, there are ways you can recover lost files yourself. Here’s how:

The first thing you should do is check the obvious places where the file may still be kept. Sometimes you'll find it in the Recycle Bin, so it’s always worth double checking before panicking too much. If the file is there, you can either drag and drop it into the desired folder, or right click and select ‘Restore’. However if your Recycle Bin has been emptied recently, or you’re a fan of the Shift-Delete shortcut which bypasses the Recycle Bin and completely deletes the data from the machine, then you may not be so lucky. Yet it is important to check other avenues – has the file been shared via email, is it backed up by a server, an external hard drive or a cloud-based service for example?

If none of the above apply however, you may still be able to recover your files using data recovery software. Although this may sound expensive, there are many programs out there that can be downloaded for free from the internet. Recuva is one of our favorites as it is specifically designed to recover files that have been accidently deleted. Simple and easy to use, the software opens by default to a file recovery wizard. This is ideal for novices or those who may have never used such software. However those who are more competent can easily skip this step. From there you will be able to choose the type of file you're trying to recover, whether it be a picture, document, compressed folder, email or any other file, and it will focus its search accordingly. You can even target your search to a specific location, or let it search all your drives. Another feature includes the option to perform a quick or deep scan. Once you’ve chosen your options, simply click ‘Start’ and the scan will begin.

Once it’s completed your results are presented in a list format, with each recovered file given a rating relating to its condition. The software then gives you the option to recover files directly from here or switch to Advanced Mode for a deeper view of each file, including file preview, additional information and a peek at the file's header.

Despite software, such as Recuva, offering easy to use and seamless data recovery, there really is no substitute for backing up your documents, files and data. External hard drives are one of the best ways to ensure your files are kept safe and secure should disaster strike or you accidently delete a file or folder. We stock a wide range of hard drives, ranging in sizes and capacities. Browse our range to find out more.
